SPORTS ROUND UP
Cardiff Schools U11 Rugby
Huge congratulations to Harry, who had the honour of captaining Cardiff Schools U11 at The Principality Stadium last month in the DC Thomas Cup final. Unfortunately Cardiff Schools lost to a very well drilled Bridgend Schools team, but a memorable day for Harry and his team, and a massive well done from the whole school!
Cardiff & Vale U10 Cricket
Our 2 Cardiff & Vale cricket representatives, Owen B and Owen F, have contributed significantly to their team`s early season matches, with Owen F taking an impressive 4 wickets in a match against Millfield School, while Owen B showed his prowess with the bat against Herefordshire, scoring 19 runs. Well played boys!
Marlborough Cricket Team Beat The Weather To Make Successful Start To the Season
Marlborough`s kwik cricket team played their first match of the season recently against St. Johns College Cardiff. Due to the continuous rain which made playing outdoors impossible, the match was switched to St. Johns superb indoor sports hall. Marlborough won the toss and elected to bowl first, and put on an outstanding display of accurate bowling, backed up by some very sharp fielding, which restricted St. Johns College to a modest score of 216 after 15 overs (each team starts with a score of 200, and the total rises and falls due to runs scored and wickets taken). Top wicket takers were Owen B with 3 and Charlie C with 2. The high standard of cricket was maintained during the Marlborough innings, which eventually finished on a very impressive score of 328. Top scorers were captain Charlie C, Owen F and Harry B. The result, whilst very pleasing, was secondary to the performance, with every player in the team contributing runs and most players taking a wicket, coupled with an excellent team spirit and good sportsmanship. A big thank you to the parents for their support, and St. Johns College for their hospitality and for switching the match at short notice.
Marlborough Cricket A & B Teams V Ysgol Y Wern
Both Marlborough`s kwik cricket teams played against Ysgol Y Wern, Cardiff, on a rare dry and sunny day, with both teams representing the school superbly. The B team lost narrowly against a team containing mostly Year 6 boys, and for all the Marlborough players this was their first ever cricket game for the school. The A team was involved in a low scoring thriller, and again played a team consisting of all Year 6 boys, while Marlborough`s team was made up of one Year 6, six Year 5`s and one Year 3. With both schools` bowling on top, the match came down to the last ball, with Y Wern needing 2 runs to win, but a fantastic ball resulted in only 1 run being scored, which meant that Marlborough had won the match by 1 run! An exciting end to what was a great match played in the right spirit between two talented teams.
Cardiff Kwik Cricket Finals
Due to several postponements because of the weather, Marlborough A team were fortunate to be put straight through to this year`s Cardiff kwik cricket finals, held at Radyr Cricket club, where they would face some of the best schools from the city. With most schools fielding mainly Year 6 children, this would be a real test for Marlborough`s young squad, which consisted of three Year 6`s, five Year 5`s and one Year 3. With 3 matches to play in the group stage, the team performed brilliantly, winning 2 and only losing the other match to the eventual winners of the competition, Rhiwbina Primary, by 3 runs. Considering the age of the squad, this was a magnificent effort, with every player contributing in the matches, and showing true team spirit and sportsmanship. Most of the squad are still eligible to play next year, which really bodes well for the future. A huge well done boys and girl!
